In a landmark move to preserve cultural heritage and support traditional festivities, the Odisha government has approved a financial grant of ₹7.14 crore for the state’s Durga pandals. Announced for the first time this year under the directives of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, the aid will benefit 1,085 pandals across the state, categorised based on their historical significance and age.
The decision, revealed in a press note from the Department of Odia Language, Literature & Culture, aims to empower organisers of these iconic Durga Puja installations, ensuring vibrant celebrations amid rising costs.
The pandals have been divided into three categories to prioritise heritage sites while extending support to community efforts.
Category A – Heritage Pandals:
A total of 215 time-honoured installations, renowned for their cultural legacy, will receive ₹2.17 crore. Each qualifying pandal gets ₹1.01 lakh, recognising their role in upholding Odisha’s artistic traditions.
Category B – Pandals Over 75 Years Old:
197 structures, allocated ₹1.48 crore at ₹75,000 per pandal. This tier honours the enduring spirit of these veteran setups, many of which have been central to local festivals for generations.
Category C – Pandals Over 50 Years Old:
673 pandals, with a substantial ₹3.37 crore infusion at ₹50,000 each. This broad support ensures that even mid-tier historical pandals can maintain their grandeur during the nine-day extravaganza.
