A heartbreaking incident unfolded at Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya in Dhobatota, Kandhamal district, where eighth-grade student Tushar Mishra died after accidentally swallowing a safety pin.
The boy reportedly removed the pin from a notice board and swallowed it unintentionally while distracted.
Tushar immediately informed school authorities and submitted a written request to go home. Despite repeated pleas, the school allegedly delayed informing his family until 4 PM. His parents rushed him to Phulbani District Hospital, then to Berhampur Medical College for surgery. As his condition worsened, he was transferred to Cuttack SCB Medical College, where he died during treatment.
The family has accused the school of gross negligence, stating that timely medical attention could have saved their son. They are demanding a review of CCTV footage and strict action against the responsible staff. A formal complaint at the local police station is reportedly underway.
This tragedy has sparked widespread grief and outrage in Kandhamal. Locals recall a similar incident months ago in Salaguda, where students suffered eye injuries due to teacher negligence involving glue. The repeated lapses have intensified calls for accountability.
Tushar, described as a bright student and the only child of his parents, leaves behind a grieving family and a community in mourning. Education officials and district administration are under pressure to investigate and ensure such incidents never recur.
