Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar added new species through an animal exchange programme with Dr. Shyamaprasad Mukherjee Zoological Garden in Surat.

The Central Zoo Authority approved the initiative to enhance conservation and genetic diversity.

The exchange brought Smooth-coated Otters, Indian Grey Wolves, Indian Star Tortoises, and Silver Pheasants to Nandankanan. The otters, three males and two females, mark a significant addition since the zoo last housed them in 2000. Ten star tortoises, two wolves, and two pheasants also joined the collection.

A combined team from both zoos transported the animals early morning. With these arrivals, Nandankanan’s species count rose from 176 to 177. The animals will remain in quarantine for 20 to 30 days before moving to their enclosures. The Smooth-coated Otter stands out as a highlight, symbolising renewed focus on aquatic species.

In return, Nandankanan will send Royal Bengal Tigers, Indian Grey Wolves, Four-horned Antelopes, Barking Deer, and Indian Jackals to Surat. The transfer will occur in two phases. The first phase will include antelopes, deer, and jackals, while the second will send tigers and wolves.

Zoo officials emphasised that the exchange strengthens conservation goals and introduces new bloodlines to improve genetic diversity. The programme reflects collaboration between institutions to preserve wildlife and enrich visitor experiences.
