With profound sadness, Nandankanan Zoological Park announces the demise of Julu, a beloved chimpanzee, on the morning of 30th December 2024 due to old age-related ailments.
Born on 12th October 1988 at Singapore Zoo and brought to Nandankanan Zoo on 16th May 1994, Julu significantly contributed to the chimpanzee conservation efforts of Nandankanan Zoo, siring 12 offspring, with eight surviving.
At 36 years old, he has been under expert care since August 2024 for old age-related issues, involving specialists from CVSc & AH, OUAT, other zoos in India, and Toronto Zoo, Canada. Julu’s legacy as a key contributor to captive breeding and conservation of this species.
He will be deeply missed by the Nandankanan family and the conservation community. With the demise of Julu, Nandankanan was left with 7 (one male, five females and one baby) chimpanzees.
