Central Myanmar was struck by two powerful earthquakes, measuring 6.4 and 7.7 on the Richter scale, on Friday.
The epicenter, near Sagaing—50 kilometers east of Monywa—caused widespread tremors felt as far as Bangkok, Thailand and China’s Yunnan Province.
While Myanmar is grappling with the aftermath of the quakes amidst a civil war, there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. Authorities are currently assessing the impact in the affected areas.
In Bangkok, the tremors sent shockwaves through the city, prompting residents to evacuate high-rise buildings and gather in the streets. As seismologists monitor for aftershocks, both Thai and Myanmar officials are urging people to stay alert and exercise caution.
This seismic event underscores the vulnerability of the region, urging governments to enhance disaster preparedness and response mechanisms.
