The mutilated bodies of a couple were found on the railway track near Laxmipur Railway Station in Koraput district on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Buru Khura (58) and his wife Yamuna Khura (54), natives of Burja village under Laxmipur police limits. They are survived by three children.
Sources said that the couple used to travel from village to village selling goods and utensils. While they were returning to their village, a passenger train hit them while crossing the railway tracks.
Locals first noticed the bodies on the tracks in the morning and alerted the police. The bodies were then retrieved and sent for autopsy.
Whether the couple died by suicide or were hit by a moving train is yet to be ascertained and police are probing all angles to establish the cause of death.
