Star Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu returned to the podium at the World Championships, clinching silver in the women’s 48kg category with a total lift of 199kg (84kg snatch + 115kg clean and jerk).
The 2017 world champion and 2022 silver medallist, competing after dropping down from the 49kg class, struggled in the snatch with two failed attempts at 87kg but staged a comeback in the clean and jerk. The former world record holder cleared 109kg, 112kg, and 115kg with ease — her best effort in clean and jerk since the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, where she also won silver.
North Korea’s Ri Song Gum dominated the field to win gold with a record-breaking 213kg (91kg + 122kg), setting new world marks in both total and clean and jerk. Thailand’s Thanyathon Sukcharoen claimed bronze with 198kg (88kg + 110kg).
Chanu’s chief coach Vijay Sharma had set a target of breaching the 200kg mark in this event as the Indian prepares to regain her top form in the 48kg category.
