Malayalam film actor Minu Muneer was granted bail on Tuesday in connection with a defamation case filed by veteran actor-director Balachandra Menon.
The case stems from controversial social media posts made by Muneer in 2024, which allegedly targeted Menon and damaged his reputation.
The cybercrime wing of Kochi police arrested Muneer after the Kerala High Court rejected her anticipatory bail plea. Following questioning, she was released on bail on July 1.
According to the police report, Muneer had posted a series of defamatory comments against Menon over several months, prompting him to file a formal complaint. Authorities have confirmed that digital evidence is being compiled and will be included in the charge sheet.
The incident has reignited debates about accountability on social media platforms, especially when influential figures are involved. Legal experts have stressed the importance of responsible online behaviour and reiterated the increasing role of cybercrime units in curbing digital defamation.
The Malayalam film industry has reacted with caution, with insiders highlighting the need for greater restraint and respect within artistic communities.
While Muneer has not issued a public statement post-release, sources indicate that further investigation is ongoing.
