A mild earthquake measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale jolted Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Monday morning, and residents experienced brief panic.

The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported that the earthquake struck at 8:44 am with its epicentre in North Delhi. Moreover, the tremor originated at a shallow depth of five kilometres, which explains why people felt it despite the low magnitude. Officials confirmed that no injuries or property damage occurred.

The NCS statement read: “EQ of M: 2.8, On: 19/01/2026 08:44:16 IST, Lat: 28.86 N, Long: 77.06 E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: North Delhi, Delhi.”

Meanwhile, another earthquake measuring 3.5 hit Uttarakhand’s Bageshwar district on Tuesday at 7:25 am. The tremor originated at a depth of 10 kilometres, and the epicentre was located at latitude 29.93 degrees north and longitude 80.07 degrees east.

Earlier, on January 12, a magnitude 3.0 earthquake shook Manipur’s Thoubal district at 4:20 am. The tremor originated at a depth of 45 kilometres, and the epicentre was recorded at latitude 24.49 degrees north and longitude 94.02 degrees east.

Consequently, the recent series of mild earthquakes in Delhi, Uttarakhand, and Manipur highlights ongoing seismic activity across different regions of India. Furthermore, experts emphasise the importance of preparedness and awareness in vulnerable zones, even when tremors appear minor.
