Lionel Messi broke the international assist record as Argentina thrashed Puerto Rico 6-0 in a friendly match held at Chase Stadium, home of Messi’s MLS club Inter Miami.
Messi assisted two goals, bringing his total to 60 international assists and surpassing Neymar’s previous record of 59. He played the full match and orchestrated Argentina’s dominant performance.
Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a header. Messi then delivered a precise through ball to Gonzalo Montiel, who netted Argentina’s second goal in the 23rd minute. Mac Allister added another in the 36th minute, giving Argentina a 3-0 lead at halftime.
Puerto Rico’s Steven Echevarria scored an own goal in the 64th minute, extending Argentina’s lead to 4-0. Lautaro Martinez, who entered in the 63rd minute, scored twice—once in the 79th minute and again in the 84th, the latter assisted by Messi.
Organizers moved the match from Chicago to Miami due to low ticket sales. Despite the change, Argentina delivered a commanding performance.
Argentina came into the match after a 1-0 win over Colombia last Friday. Puerto Rico had defeated St. Vincent and the Grenadines 2-1 on the same day.
Messi’s assist record adds another milestone to his legendary career. His influence on the pitch continues to elevate Argentina’s attacking prowess, while younger talents like Mac Allister and Martinez shine alongside him.
Argentina’s victory and Messi’s record-breaking performance reaffirm their strength ahead of future international fixtures. Fans at Chase Stadium witnessed a historic moment as Messi etched his name deeper into football history.
