A shocking incident unfolded in Charadia village under Bansada police station in Bhadrak district, where a father consumed poison after his daughter faced brutal humiliation in a kangaroo court.
Reports revealed that women’s groups, protesting against illegal liquor trade in the village, stormed the house of a family accused of selling liquor. Armed with sticks and household tools, they allegedly assaulted family members and vandalised property. The daughter, Lakshmipriya, was dragged to the village square, beaten, and forced to wear shoes around her neck in a public display of humiliation.
The kangaroo court imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the family. Her father, Lambodar Tarai, managed to secure her release by paying ₹10,000 in advance. However, the trauma, threats of arson, and continued harassment proved unbearable. Later that night, Lambodar consumed poison and died at Chandbali hospital.
Following the tragedy, the family lodged a complaint with the Bansada police. Authorities registered a case against 10 individuals allegedly involved in the incident. Police confirmed that investigations are underway.
Locals stated that the illegal liquor trade has persisted in Charadia despite repeated protests. Women’s groups had earlier mobilised hundreds of villagers to demand action, but frustration over the lack of enforcement led them to take the law into their own hands.
