The skyline of Bhubaneswar has come alive with vibrant colours as hundreds of kites filled the sky during the celebrations of Makar Sankranti at Sisir Saras 2026.
The festive spirit was enriched by an exciting Kite Show organised by ORMAS and Subhadra Shakti, which spread hues of hope, joy, and tradition across the city.
The two-day Kite Show, held on January 14 and 15, has become one of the main attractions of the fair. Participants showcased their creativity with beautifully designed kites, delighting visitors. Inspired by traditional motifs, birds, animals, and folk art, the kites also incorporated modern elements, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Odisha.
To prioritise public safety, ORMAS ensured the use of safe kite threads, focusing on the protection of birds, pedestrians, and the general public. These thoughtful measures have been widely appreciated by visitors. The kite exhibition is not just a form of entertainment; it is a joyful celebration of Odisha’s core culture, age-old traditions, and community harmony. Visitors thoroughly enjoyed this colourful spectacle in the sky.
In the first series of displays, participants flew 100 kites within a square meter of paper, 75 bird-shaped kites made from 1.2-meter ripstop nylon, and 30 parafoil design kites ranging from 4 to 20 meters. A 16-meter-diameter ring kite and letter kites were also featured. A special highlight of the exhibition was the 26-square-meter parafoil pilot kite, which bore the mascot name “Sisir Saras of ORMAS.”
On the fifth day of the fair, ORMAS organised a kite-making workshop, where students from various schools in the capital participated and learned how to create kites. Around 100 students from Kendriya Vidyalaya and Saraswati Shishu Bidya Mandir took part in the workshop, receiving training from an organisation known as “Kite Man.” This initiative helped revive the traditional practice of kite flying during Makar Sankranti at Sisir Saras.
On the fourth day, business turnover at Sisir Saras 2026 exceeded Rs 95 lakh. Considering the cumulative sales from the previous days, the total trade has surpassed Rs 4 crore.
While visitors enjoyed the Kite Show during the day, the evening cultural program featured performances by Ollywood singer Kuldeep Pattnaik and Odia rapper Black Baa, whose energetic performances captivated the youth.
