A strong earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Crete, Greece, prompting tsunami risk evaluations, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ). The quake occurred at a depth of 77 kilometers beneath the seabed.
Following the seismic event, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) confirmed that a tsunami threat is currently under assessment. “Depending on the earthquake’s proximity to the coastline, tsunamis may be classified as local (within 100 km), regional (within 1,000 km), or distant (beyond 1,000 km),” EMSC stated.
As per the Institute of Geodynamics in Greece. the earthquake was of magnitude 6.1. Whereas, ESMC stated that the magnitude of the earthquake was recorded to be at 6.3.
Authorities and geological experts are monitoring the situation closely, while no immediate reports of damage or casualties have been confirmed.
