A low pressure area has developed over Southwest Bangladesh and the adjoining Gangetic West Bengal region under the influence of a cyclonic circulation, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The system, which formed around 5:30 AM on Tuesday, is likely to intensify over the next 24 hours and move in a west-northwestward direction, significantly impacting weather conditions in Odisha.

As a result, the state is expected to witness widespread rainfall for the next three days. The southwest monsoon is also forecast to strengthen further, creating favourable conditions for its continued advancement into more parts of Odisha and neighbouring Chhattisgarh.

The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued forecasts for moderate to heavy rainfall in several districts, with warnings of heavy to very heavy downpours particularly in Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Mayurbhanj, and Balasore on Tuesday. Wind speeds in some areas may reach 30 to 40 kmph.

Weather experts suggest that as the monsoon current gains momentum, both the intensity and coverage of rainfall across Odisha are expected to increase. The IMD has advised residents in vulnerable and low-lying areas to exercise caution, avoid waterlogged zones, and stay alert to any developments.

Rainfall activity is projected to continue through June 19, with isolated instances of extremely heavy rain possible. Local authorities have been instructed to remain on standby and prepared for any weather-related emergencies.
