A low-pressure system formed over the northern Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression, prompting a weather alert across Odisha.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicated that the system is moving west-northwest and is expected to impact northern Odisha within hours.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, the depression could bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to several districts over the next four days. Early morning showers were reported in several regions on Friday, confirming the onset of the weather system.
Red alerts have been issued in two districts, with moderate rain predicted in others. North and interior Odisha are likely to witness intense rainfall activity, with potential for flooding and disruption of daily life.
In anticipation, the Mayurbhanj district administration has directed all government and private schools to remain closed. Students residing in hostels have been instructed to vacate asbestos or temporary buildings and move into safer, concrete structures.
Weather officials warn that the rainfall intensity may peak over the next 12 hours and could persist until July 28. Authorities urge residents in vulnerable areas to take precautions and remain alert to further updates.
