Argentina’s football icon Lionel Messi has confirmed he will not participate in the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Ecuador, scheduled for September 10 at Estadio Monumental Isidro Romero Carbo in Guayaquil.
Following Argentina’s 3–0 victory over Venezuela, where Messi scored twice, the captain revealed that he and coach Lionel Scaloni mutually agreed he should rest. “I’m coming back from an injury and although I’m fine now, we prefer to avoid travelling and playing another game, so I can rest up for what’s coming next,” Messi stated.
Messi’s absence comes at a crucial moment in Argentina’s qualifying campaign. Despite his decision to sit out, the team remains optimistic, buoyed by his stellar performance against Venezuela and the depth of talent in the squad.
Messi, who now holds the record for most goals in South American World Cup qualifiers with 36, has not yet announced his retirement plans. With the 2030 World Cup qualifiers beginning in 2027, speculation continues about whether he will aim for one final tournament.
Argentina will rely on its younger stars to fill the void as fans await Messi’s return to the pitch.
