New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday submitted to the Supreme Court its status report on the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. In its status report, the CBI claimed the crime scene was altered and the West Bengal Police told parents it was a suicide, then they said it was a murder.
During the hearing on the trainee doctor’s rape-murder case heard by a bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing CBI, flagged the delay in the filing of the FIR.
“The most shocking fact is that the first FIR was registered at 11:45 pm after cremation. The parents were told it was a suicide, then death and then friends of the doctor at the hospital insisted on videography. They also suspected something was amiss,” Mehta said.
“As we entered the fifth day of the investigation, everything was altered, including the crime scene,” he said.
The lie-detector test on accused Sanjoy Roy, a civil volunteer with Kolkata Police, arrested in connection with the gruesome incident, was yet to be conducted, the CBI told the court.
The CBI said it found lapses on the part of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital authorities in handling the case with sensitivity.
The probe agency believes that in spite of knowing all the protocols in such cases, the hospital authorities sacked Dr Sandip Ghosh as the principal and failed to protect the crime scene completely.
The Supreme Court was informed that Dr Ghosh did not act proactively even after the information about the rape-murder was provided to him.
The renovation work near the crime scene is also under the CBI scanner and Dr Ghosh was being questioned on these lines. The investigative agency is also investigating the delay in the registration of the FIR in the case.
Amid the public outcry, Dr Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, resigned from his post over the incident, and was transferred to the prestigious Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital amid the protests. But, the decision was revoked after massive criticism.
The probe suggests that Roy was the only person involved in the gruesome incident.
The forensic report, according to sources, suggests that the doctor was raped and killed by Roy, a civic volunteer who was attached to the Kolkata Police. The DNA report has also reportedly confirmed the involvement of one person. The revelations are key given initial theories and allegations of the likelihood of involvement of more than one person in the rape-murder.
