A one‑year‑old elephant calf died in Odisha’s Keonjhar district after falling into an open well at Kathabaunshuli village under the Sadar forest range early Friday morning.
The incident occurred around 3 am when a herd of nearly ten elephants crossed the area near the village.
Reports confirmed that the calf accidentally slipped into a well owned by Mohan Charan Mohanta. The herd immediately tried to rescue the calf, but stones from the upper portion of the well loosened and fell inside. One of the stones struck the calf on the head, leading to its death.
Forest Department personnel reached the spot soon after receiving information. Officials recovered the carcass from the well and sent it for post‑mortem examination. Authorities later announced that the body would be buried at Padmapur nursery after completing necessary procedures.
