Investigations into coal theft in Odisha have gained momentum, with authorities conducting multi-level probes.
Union Minister Shri Jual Oram expressed his commitment to taking decisive action if evidence emerges. He also mentioned that he might write to the Ministry of Coal if necessary.
The District Magistrate of Sundargarh, Dasharathi Sarabu, revealed that coal from illegal mines was being transported to other states, supplying large brick kilns and industries. Police and administrative teams have already arrested four individuals involved in illegal mining operations in the Gopalpur Forest Range, Sundargarh district. Raids were conducted in areas like Telenadihi, Ratansara, Bhograkachhar, Latapani, and Jamkani forests, leading to the seizure of 250 tons of illegally mined coal.
Despite years of ongoing illegal mining, the issue only came to light recently, thanks to media reports. Former Speaker and senior Congress leader Kishore Chandra Patel has demanded a judicial inquiry led by a High Court judge to investigate the matter thoroughly.
