A man allegedly hacked his nephew to death with a sharp weapon in Jahanpur village under Jagatsinghpur police jurisdiction early Thursday morning.
The victim, identified as a 21-year-old Raja Das from Bhoi Sahi, succumbed on the spot.
According to preliminary reports, the accused, Sanjay Das (aged around 45), attacked Raja for reasons yet to be determined. The brutality of the act sparked public outrage, leading villagers to apprehend Sanjay, beat him, and tie him to a tree in retaliation.
Local police arrived promptly, rescuing the accused from the angry mob and placing him in custody. Sanjay was subsequently taken to the District Headquarters Hospital for treatment. The deceased’s body has been sent for post-mortem as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police officials have confirmed that an inquiry is underway to determine the motive behind the fatal attack. The incident highlights growing concerns over rising interpersonal violence within families across rural Odisha.
