ISKCON Faces Backlash for Organizing Untimely Rath Yatra in Rishikesh

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) has sparked fresh controversy after organizing an untimely Rath Yatra in Rishikesh, allegedly violating Jagannath temple traditions and established ritual calendars.

The incident has drawn sharp criticism from devotees, cultural experts, and scholars for what many describe as a recurring act of disregard toward centuries-old religious practices.

Rath Yatra Held Before Ritual Date

According to reports, ISKCON’s Madhuban Ashram in Rishikesh conducted the 28th Shree Jagannath Rath Yatra on October 7, much earlier than the prescribed period. The chariot procession began from the ashram at around 9:30 am and concluded near the Shri Guru Singh Sabha Gurudwara, passing through the Triveni Ghat Chowk.

Witnesses said that the idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra were carried on a four-wheeled vehicle instead of a traditional wooden chariot, adding to the debate over ritual authenticity.

SJTA’s Prior Warning Ignored

The controversy follows a recent warning from the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA). In September, during a meeting chaired by Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb, the SJTA had issued a 100-page advisory to ISKCON, outlining how conducting out-of-season rituals like Snana Yatra and Rath Yatra violated Jagannath temple norms and long-standing religious customs.

The administration had also cautioned that legal action could be taken if such practices continued. Despite the notice, ISKCON proceeded with the Rishikesh event, prompting widespread outrage across Odisha’s Jagannath community.

Religious Leaders Condemn the Move

Religious scholars, temple servitors, and devotees have called for strict action against ISKCON for allegedly undermining the sanctity of Jagannath tradition.

“As per the tradition, Rath Yatra is organised on the Dwitiya Tithi of Suklapakhya in the month of Asadha, a ritual followed for over 700–800 years,” said the Executive President of Mukti Mandap Pundit Sabha.
“We strongly condemn the act of organizing an untimely Rath Yatra that misrepresents Jagannath culture and confuses devotees,” he added.

Cultural Significance of the Rath Yatra

The Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath is one of India’s oldest and most sacred festivals, symbolizing inclusivity, devotion, and divine compassion. Traditionally held in Puri, Odisha, it follows a precise lunar calendar, and any deviation is seen as a violation of the religious code maintained for centuries.

Many devotees fear that repeated instances of out-of-season processions dilute the festival’s spiritual and cultural value, calling for greater regulation and cooperation among religious organizations.

No Official Response Yet from ISKCON

As of now, ISKCON has not issued an official statement regarding the Rishikesh event or the criticism that followed. Devotees and temple authorities await clarification on whether the organization plans to align its future rituals with the Jagannath Temple’s guidelines.
