A young Indian couple has traded their high-paying corporate jobs in Singapore for a slower, more fulfilling life in the Indian countryside — a decision that many initially called a “mistake,” but one they now say was the best choice they ever made.
The story, shared by Sharmilaa on Instagram (@virtuallybysh), shows the couple and their young daughter living on a serene hill-view farm, surrounded by greenery, hens, and the laughter of children playing in nature.
From Hustle to Harmony
Three years ago, without a concrete plan, the couple walked away from demanding corporate roles — Sharmilaa herself is a former design and project engineer with a Master’s degree from Singapore.
“We chose freedom over the hustle… Not a perfect plan, just a quiet decision to prioritise life over work,” she wrote.
Her initial goal was modest: to earn Rs 20,000 a month as a remote Virtual Assistant while having flexibility for family time. That small start has now grown into a stable business, giving the family both financial security and freedom.
Life in the Hills
Now based in the Indian hills, the couple spends their days working remotely, enjoying nature, and raising their daughter in a stress-free environment. Sharmilaa also mentors others seeking remote work opportunities.
The Instagram Reel captioned, “POV: They said resigning from a high-paying job in Singapore was a mistake and I showed them this”, struck a chord with thousands, inspiring people who dream of escaping the rat race.
Social Media Reaction
Many users praised the couple’s courage, with comments celebrating their choice to prioritise family, peace, and nature over corporate grind. Others admitted they dream of doing the same — trading city chaos for quiet mornings in the countryside.
