India’s ‘One Nation One Police Uniform’ policy is moving into its implementation phase.
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has directed 16 states and Union Territories, including Odisha, to submit detailed data on police uniforms and allowances by November 4.
The MHA has asked for rank-wise information from Constable to Deputy Superintendent of Police, including annual uniform allowances and the cost of current uniforms. Odisha’s DGP Control Room has instructed the State Police Headquarters to compile and forward the required data promptly.
The Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) is leading the design effort. It will analyze material, color, insignia, and cost to recommend a standardized model. While the Centre aims for uniformity in design and fabric, states may retain their emblems and ranks to preserve identity.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi first proposed the idea during the Chintan Shivir of State Home Ministers in October 2022. The goal is to enhance public recognition of police personnel and foster institutional coherence.
Once the data is reviewed, the MHA will issue phased implementation guidelines, including procurement standards and color codes. This marks the first time India will adopt a single police uniform design across all states, replacing decades of regional variation.
The initiative is expected to be formally announced after inter-ministerial consultations conclude.
