India will host the 5th Coast Guard Global Summit (CGGS) in Chennai in 2027, reaffirming its growing leadership in international maritime cooperation.
The announcement was made following unanimous approval at the 4th CGGS held in Rome, Italy, from September 11–12, 2025, attended by delegates from 115 countries and global organizations.
The three-day summit will coincide with the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and will feature an International Coast Guard Fleet Review and a World Coast Guard Seminar. These events aim to foster dialogue on emerging maritime challenges and promote unity among global Coast Guard forces.
Director General of the Indian Coast Guard, Paramesh Sivamani, emphasized the importance of collective action in maritime security. “No single nation can address the full spectrum of maritime issues alone,” he stated, adding that the Chennai Summit will serve as an inclusive platform to build trust, interoperability, and stronger cooperation worldwide.
During the ceremonial handover of the CGGS Presidency, DG Sivamani expressed gratitude to the Italian Coast Guard for its hospitality and acknowledged the Japan Coast Guard’s role as CGGS Secretariat. On the sidelines, DG ICG met with the Commandant of the Italian Coast Guard to discuss enhanced collaboration under the India–Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025–2029.
Key areas of cooperation include Maritime Search and Rescue (M-SAR), Marine Pollution Response, environmental protection, countering transnational maritime crimes, information exchange, maritime domain awareness, capacity building, training, and technical assistance.
India’s hosting of CGGS 2027 marks a pivotal moment in its maritime diplomacy and commitment to global security.
