The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed deep sorrow over the recent death of Prakriti Lamsal, a Nepalese student at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized India’s commitment to the safety and well-being of all international students studying in the country.

In response to the tragic incident, the MEA has maintained close contact with the Odisha government, KIIT authorities, and Nepalese officials. Odisha Police have taken significant action, arresting several staff members and an engineering student linked to Lamsal’s death. These arrests are part of an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding her demise.

The tragedy has sparked protests from Nepalese students at KIIT, demanding justice for Lamsal. In a heartfelt response, KIIT founder Achyuta Samanta apologized to the parents of Nepalese students and urged those who had left the campus to return. Samanta also announced the establishment of a scholarship in Lamsal’s memory as a tribute to her legacy.

Senior officials from the Nepalese Embassy in New Delhi visited the campus to assure students that steps would be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The death of Prakriti Lamsal has shed light on the importance of ensuring the safety and security of international students in India, reinforcing the country’s dedication to their well-being.
