New Delhi : The Government of India has officially launched the Phase-1 of the ‘One Nation One Subscription’ (ONOS) scheme, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at democratizing access to scholarly research across the nation.
With an allocation of Rs 6,000 crore, this ambitious project is set to benefit approximately 1.8 crore students, faculty, and researchers.
The ONOS scheme will provide access to over 13,000 international journals from 30 prominent publishers, including Elsevier, Springer-Nature, Taylor & Francis, and Wiley. This initiative will cover more than 6,300 government-managed higher education institutions and research and development (R&D) institutes, including central and state universities and colleges.
The funding, which spans three years (2025-2027), will cover subscription charges for all participating institutions. Additionally, the scheme includes central funding support of Rs 150 crore per year to assist Indian authors in publishing in high-quality Open Access (OA) journals.
The ONOS initiative is a key component of the Viksitbharat@2047 vision, which aims to position India as a leading global power driven by cutting-edge research and technological advancement. By providing widespread access to top-tier research publications, the government hopes to foster a vibrant research culture, particularly in tier-2 and tier-3 institutions.
The Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India emphasized the transformative potential of ONOS, stating, “This initiative will significantly enhance the research capabilities of our academic and R&D institutions, paving the way for innovative solutions to national and global challenges.”
As the ONOS scheme rolls out, it is expected to bridge the gap in research access and contribute to India’s goal of becoming a self-reliant and developed nation by 2047.
