Bangladesh showcased a remarkable recovery, posting a total of 228 against India in the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 after losing five wickets for just 35 runs within the first nine overs.
Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto’s decision to bat first seemed to backfire as Indian bowlers dominated the early stages of the match.
Mohammed Shami struck early, dismissing Soumya Sarkar (0 off 5 balls) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (5 off 10 balls). Harshit Rana complemented Shami’s efforts by sending captain Shanto (0 off 2 balls) back to the pavilion, reducing Bangladesh to 3/5. Spinner Axar Patel added to Bangladesh’s woes by taking two wickets in a single over, removing Tanzid Hasan (25 off 25 balls) and veteran wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim (0 off 1 ball).
India had the opportunity to maintain pressure, but missed chances allowed Bangladesh to regroup. Rohit Sharma dropped an easy catch of Jaker Ali, and Axar Patel missed out on a hat-trick. Towhid Hridoy and Jaker Ali then formed a crucial 154-run partnership, guiding Bangladesh to a respectable total.
Mohammed Shami eventually broke the partnership and claimed his 200th ODI wicket by dismissing Jaker Ali (68 off 114 balls) with a catch by Virat Kohli at long-on. Hridoy’s century, scoring 100 off 118 deliveries, including six fours and two sixes, was instrumental in lifting Bangladesh’s score.
Shami led India’s bowling attack with figures of 5/53 in his 10 overs, while Harshit Rana and Axar Patel supported with three and two wickets respectively.
