The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed that the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has weakened into a depression and is currently situated over Bangladesh.

However, its impact continues to loom large over Odisha, with widespread thunderstorms and heavy rainfall expected across several districts.

The IMD has issued a Red Alert for northern districts of Odisha, warning of extremely heavy rainfall, particularly in eastern and northeastern parts of the state. The system’s cloud bands and moisture-laden winds have already started affecting the region, with precipitation intensifying over the next 24 hours. Some areas could receive rainfall in excess of 20 cm, posing a risk of waterlogging and flash floods.

An Orange Alert has been declared for Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, and Bargarh districts. Forecasts indicate moderate thunderstorms, gusty winds (40–50 kmph), and lightning in these areas.

“Thunderstorms may develop within three hours of alert issuance,” IMD warned.

Residents have been advised to remain indoors, avoid open areas during lightning, and secure outdoor objects. The IMD also cautioned about potential damage to banana plantations, standing crops, and weak structures.

In a major development, the southwest monsoon has officially advanced into southern Odisha, marking an early onset compared to its usual arrival in the second week of June.
This follows a similar early monsoon arrival over Kerala, and the rain-bearing winds are now expected to progress into central and northern Odisha within the next two to three days.

  • System Status: Depression over Bangladesh (previously a deep depression)

  • Primary Impact Zones: Eastern, Northeastern, and Western Odisha

  • Alerts Issued:

    • Red Alert for Northern Odisha (heavy to extremely heavy rainfall)

    • Orange Alert for Western Odisha (thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds)

The weather office has urged citizens, especially farmers and those in low-lying areas, to stay updated with official bulletins and follow safety protocols during this active weather phase.
