India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has firmly dismissed concerns over his form, stating that he is “not out of form, but definitely out of runs,” amid growing scrutiny over his batting ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026.
Suryakumar’s remarks came after India’s seven-wicket win over South Africa in the third T20I at Dharamsala on Sunday, where the right-handed batter failed to convert another start, marking his third consecutive low score in the series.
Lean Run in Indian Colours Raises Questions
The 35-year-old has endured a difficult year in international cricket. In 20 matches in 2025, Suryakumar has crossed the 30-run mark only twice and is yet to score a half-century, averaging below 15 for India.
His highest score this year remains 47 not out against Pakistan during the Asia Cup in Dubai. Notably, this downturn contrasts sharply with his domestic form, where he amassed 717 runs for Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2025.
Repeated dismissals while attempting his trademark pick-up shot have further added to concerns, with the same stroke leading to his dismissal in the Dharamsala T20I.
‘Runs Will Come at the Right Time’
Addressing the issue during the post-match presentation, Suryakumar remained confident about his preparation and mindset.
“I have been batting beautifully in the nets. I am trying everything that is in my control. When the game comes, when the runs have to come, they will definitely come. But yes, I am looking for runs,” he said.
Reiterating his stance, he added, “I’m not out of form, but definitely out of runs.”
Captaincy Record Remains Impressive
Despite his individual struggles, Suryakumar’s captaincy record in 2025 has been strong, with India yet to lose a T20I series under his leadership since he took over last year.
Reflecting on the team’s comeback after a heavy loss in the second T20I, he highlighted the importance of fundamentals.
“This sport teaches you a lot of things. How you come back into the series is more important. We went back to basics, didn’t try to do too many different things, and the results were on our side,” Suryakumar said.
He also credited detailed discussions among players and focused practice sessions for the turnaround.
Series Decider in Lucknow
India will now look to seal the five-match T20I series when they take on South Africa in the fourth T20I at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Wednesday, December 17.
