In a crucial move to manage the rising water levels in the Mahanadi river basin, four more sluice gates of Hirakud Dam were opened today, bringing the total number of open gates to eight.
The decision was taken following sustained inflow due to ongoing monsoon showers in the upstream regions.
Currently, five gates on the left spillway and three on the right have been activated to release excess floodwater. Officials from the water resources department have stated that the step was essential to prevent pressure build-up in the reservoir and ensure downstream safety.
Hirakud, Asia’s longest earthen dam, plays a vital role in Odisha’s flood control strategy. With monsoon conditions remaining active, local authorities in Sambalpur and surrounding districts have been placed on alert, and disaster response teams are monitoring the situation closely.
Residents along the riverbanks are advised to stay updated with official forecasts and avoid unnecessary travel in flood-prone zones.
