The southwest monsoon remains active across Odisha, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue heavy rainfall warnings for 19 districts, including orange alerts for Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj, where very heavy to extremely heavy downpours are expected.
As of Saturday, widespread rainfall has been reported throughout the state, and conditions are likely to persist on Sunday, with thunderstorms and gusty winds (30–40 km/h) forecast across multiple regions.
While Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj face the highest alert level due to already saturated ground and risks of waterlogging and flash floods, 17 other districts are under yellow warnings for moderate rainfall and lightning.
The IMD attributed the weather pattern to a deep monsoon trough and added that a low-pressure system is likely to form over Gangetic West Bengal and nearby areas within the next 12 hours. If it intensifies, eastern and coastal Odisha may experience prolonged rains and stronger winds early next week.
Authorities have urged residents—especially those in low-lying and flood-prone areas—to stay alert and follow local advisories to ensure safety.
