New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Education has urged Members of Parliament to raise awareness of 21 fake universities across the nation and to warn students against their deceptive claims. This initiative is designed to combat fraud in higher education.
During the Lok Sabha’s Question Hour, Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar announced that state governments and Union Territory administrations have been directed to legally close these institutions.
Majumdar called on MPs, particularly those active on social media, to disseminate the list of fake universities to prevent students from being duped.
State governments are also responsible for identifying other entities misrepresenting themselves as universities and issuing illegitimate degrees. Majumdar explained that direct action by the Centre could raise questions about federalism.
The report indicates that since 2014, 12 fake universities have been closed. Numerous First Information Reports have been lodged, and ‘show cause’ notices have been served to unauthorized institutions.
States are also asked to report any additional unlisted cases to the Centre and the University Grants Commission.
The Central government has affirmed its dedication to protecting students from fraudulent schemes, with legal action being a crucial aspect of its collaborative strategy with state governments.
