Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) marked its 64th Foundation Day on Sunday with a clarion call from Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati to champion agricultural entrepreneurship among students, farmers, and society at large.
Speaking as the chief guest at the university’s celebratory event in Bhubaneswar, the Governor emphasized OUAT’s pivotal role in driving innovation and economic growth through agriculture-based enterprises.
In his address, Governor Kambhampati urged OUAT to prepare detailed project profiles for various agricultural ventures, incorporating cost estimates, land and electricity requirements, income projections, and information on available subsidies. Such resources, he noted, would empower students and farmers to understand the economic potential of agri-based businesses and encourage their adoption. “These project profiles will serve as a roadmap for aspiring entrepreneurs, helping them tap into the vast opportunities in agriculture,” he said.
Reflecting on his visits to Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) across districts, the Governor praised the training provided to farmers but observed that only a small fraction engage in entrepreneurial activities post-training. He suggested that providing project profiles and targeted guidance could significantly boost participation in agricultural enterprises, fostering rural economic development.
Describing agriculture as the backbone of India, the Governor highlighted its cultural significance beyond being a mere profession. “Agriculture is not just a livelihood; it is an integral part of our culture, sustaining families and the economy,” he said. He commended OUAT’s role in developing skilled human resources and innovative solutions to tackle challenges like climate change and market fluctuations. The Governor also emphasized the need for greater focus on precision agriculture, biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and sustainable resource management to enhance processing, value addition, marketing, and exports.
The Governor lauded OUAT’s recognition as a leading nodal center for agricultural startups under the MSME Department and its success in mentoring 24 startups. These efforts align with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India), empowering young agri-entrepreneurs and strengthening Odisha’s presence in global markets.
The event saw Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo highlight the importance of organic farming and India’s transformation from an importing to an exporting nation. Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and MSME Gokulananda Mallik outlined government schemes to support farmers and promote agriculture. Ekamra-Bhubaneswar MLA Babu Singh and OUAT Vice-Chancellor Professor Prabhat Kumar Roul also addressed the gathering.
The ceremony, which began with a welcome address by Dean of Extension Education Dr. Prasannajit Mishra and concluded with a vote of thanks by Registrar Pratibha Dora, included the felicitation of progressive farmers, meritorious students, faculty, and staff. A commemorative booklet was released, and a new Wi-Fi facility was inaugurated on campus.
