Gangadhar Meher University (GMU), Sambalpur, has suspended Dr. Gopikanta Suna, Assistant Professor at the School of Education, following his arrest by the Mahila Police Station under Section 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
According to Office Order Memo No. 2264 issued by the university, the suspension was enacted immediately after receiving the police report (DR No. 950P.S. dated July 16, 2025) regarding Mahila P.S. Case No. 56. The Vice Chancellor in-charge exercised powers under Section 299 of the Odisha University First Statute, 1990, and Rule 12 of the Orissa Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1962 to enforce the suspension.
During the suspension period, Suna’s headquarters will be the Office of the Chairman, Post Graduate Council, GMU. He is prohibited from leaving the headquarters without prior permission and will receive a subsistence allowance as per Rule 90 of the Orissa Service Code.
The university has circulated the order to relevant authorities, including the Department of Higher Education, Government of Odisha, and the Hon’ble Chancellor’s office at Raj Bhavan, Bhubaneswar.
This decisive administrative action underscores GMU’s commitment to institutional integrity and adherence to legal protocols.
