At least 16 files linked to late financier Jeffrey Epstein disappeared from the US Justice Department’s public website within a day of being released, triggering questions from Democratic lawmakers and renewed scrutiny over transparency in the handling of the records.
The missing files, which were publicly accessible on Friday but unavailable by Saturday, reportedly included photographs and images recovered from Epstein’s properties. Among them was a photo showing President Donald Trump with Epstein, Melania Trump, and Epstein’s longtime associate Ghislaine Maxwell, according to reports.
The Justice Department did not issue any public notice explaining the removal and did not immediately respond to media queries seeking clarification.
Files Removed Amid Ongoing Epstein Document Release
The disappearance comes amid the release of thousands of Epstein-related documents, made public under a law passed overwhelmingly by Congress in November mandating disclosure. The department has said the release is being carried out in phases due to the time required for review and the need to protect the identities and privacy of victims.
Many of the released records were heavily redacted, with some documents spanning more than 100 pages entirely blacked out. The department confirmed that the material published so far represents only a partial tranche, with hundreds of thousands of pages still under review.
Trump Not Named in Written Records
While images reportedly including Trump were among the missing files, Trump’s name did not appear in the written documents released on Friday. This absence stood out, given his previously documented social association with Epstein, including appearances in earlier disclosures such as flight manifests released by the Justice Department in February.
Trump has not been accused of wrongdoing in connection with Epstein and has consistently denied any knowledge of Epstein’s crimes.
Photos of Public Figures, No Allegations
The latest release included undated photographs of well-known public figures, including former US president Bill Clinton, media personalities, musicians, and business leaders. None of the individuals shown in the photographs have been accused of criminal conduct related to Epstein.
One image reportedly showed Prince Andrew, formerly the Duke of York, who has previously denied all allegations and was stripped of his royal titles due to his association with Epstein.
Victims Criticise Redactions
Survivors and advocates have expressed frustration over the scale of redactions and the apparent removal of files.
One of Epstein’s victims, Marina Lacerda, criticised the limited disclosure, saying the extent of withheld material was deeply disappointing and hurtful to survivors who had hoped for greater accountability.
The Justice Department maintains that further disclosures are pending and that reviews are ongoing to balance public interest with victim protection and legal requirements.
