The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has intensified and expanded its investigation into alleged illegal sand mining operations originating from Odisha’s Ganjam district, with the probe now extending across multiple states, including Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, and other parts of Odisha.
According to official sources, the investigation focuses on a long-running network of illegal activities allegedly orchestrated by Kripasindhu Muduli, who is believed to be a central figure in the Ganjam sand mafia. The ED is currently tracing financial transactions and operational links connected to the network, which investigators say has grown beyond state boundaries over several years.
Raids Conducted, Cash and Evidence Seized
As part of the ongoing crackdown, the ED has conducted multiple raids at various locations in Ganjam district and other areas. One of the searches included the residence of BJD leader Hrushikesh Padhi. Officials reportedly seized large amounts of unaccounted cash along with documents and digital evidence pointing to illicit financial dealings associated with illegal sand mining.
During a recent raid in Ganjam, officials also detected significant quantities of smuggled country liquor, which investigators believe is linked to the broader illegal operations of the mafia.
Multi-State Network Under Scanner
Investigators have indicated that the sand mafia’s activities are no longer confined to Odisha. The syndicate is suspected to have operational and financial links in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra, with reported investments and money laundering activities in Goa and Maharashtra. The cross-border movement of funds has raised concerns about the expanding scale and influence of the network.
In addition to illegal sand mining, the ED is probing other unlawful businesses, including alleged illicit liquor distilleries operating in Ganjam district, while closely tracking the trail of black money uncovered during the raids.
The investigation is ongoing, and officials are expected to take further action as efforts continue to dismantle the multi-state sand mafia network.
