Police detain blasting operator Chhabindra Mahakud and his associate after a fatal stone quarry blast in Gopalpur, Dhenkanal, that killed two workers.
The blast occurred on Saturday night at the quarry site. Two labourers, Abhi Singh from Balasore and Budhu Munda from Keonjhar, lost their lives when a large stone struck them during drilling. The impact triggered a collapse of loose earth, burying them under debris. Rescue teams recovered their bodies on Sunday after an intense search.
Fire Services personnel and Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force teams led the rescue operation. Heavy machinery cleared the debris while senior officials, including the District Collector and Superintendent of Police, inspected the site.
Investigators revealed that the quarry operated without valid permission. Illegal blasting activities raised serious concerns about unauthorised mining practices in the region. Police registered a case against the quarry owner and continued questioning the detained operator and his associate.
The incident highlighted the dangers of unregulated quarry operations. Authorities emphasised accountability and pledged strict action against those responsible. The tragedy renewed focus on illegal mining in Odisha, sparking calls for stronger enforcement of safety measures.
