A well-marked low-pressure system over the northwestern Bay of Bengal has intensified into a distinct depression, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a heavy rainfall warning across Odisha until September 6.
According to IMD forecasts, the system is expected to move west-northwestward over the next 24 hours, crossing Odisha and bringing widespread rainfall across the state. Several regions are already experiencing intense showers, with more heavy to very heavy rainfall predicted in the coming days.
Today, the IMD has issued an Orange Alert for Sambalpur, Sundargarh, and Jharsuguda districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, Yellow Warnings have been declared for Koraput, Nuapada, Bolangir, Sonepur, Boudh, and Bargarh districts, where moderate to heavy rain is expected.
The active depression is also expected to bring thunderstorms and lightning, accompanied by gusty winds ranging from 30 to 40 km/h. Coastal areas may witness turbulent sea conditions due to cloud cover and wind speed, prompting authorities to advise fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea for the next 48 hours.
Rainfall continues unabated along Odisha’s coastline, with districts like Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Kendrapada, Khurda, Jajpur, and Mayurbhanj already reporting significant precipitation. IMD officials have cautioned that rainfall intensity may increase in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack in the coming hours.
