Bhubaneswar: Very Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Yaas’ is likely to make landfall near Dhamra in Bhadrak district, said the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Director General (DG), Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.
The Cyclonic Storm Yaas has intensified into a Severe Cyclonic Storm and is moving north-northwestwards. It is very likely to intensify further into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm by today evening.
Under its influence squally wind is very likely to prevail over the districts of Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, and Bhadrak after today midnight, and the cyclone will lay centred near Dhamra in Bhadrak district at around 5 AM on May 26, said Mohapatra.
The Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Yaas’ (pronounced as ‘Yass’) over Eastcentral Bay of Bengal moved northwestwards with a speed of about 10 kmph during past 6 hours, and lay centred at 0530 hrs IST of today, the 25th May, 2021 over Eastcentral & adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal near latitude 18.0°N and longitude 88.6°E, about 320 km south-southeast of Paradip (Odisha), 430 km south-southeast of Balasore (Odisha) and 420 km south-southeast of Digha (West Bengal), the IMD said in its latest bulletin.
It would continue to move north-northwestwards, intensify further and reach Northwest Bay of Bengal near north Odisha and West Bengal coasts very close to Chandbali-Dhamra port by the early morning of Wednesday, the 26th May.
As per the predictions, it will cross the land in between north of Dhamra and south of Balasore in the afternoon of May 26 as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm, he added.
