As Cyclone Montha, the first major storm of the season, approaches, Odisha is preparing for heavy rainfall and strong winds, especially in the southern and coastal districts.

Although the cyclone is not expected to make a direct landfall in Odisha, heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecasted in areas such as Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Nabarangpur between October 28 and 29, which have been categorized under the Red Zone.

In anticipation of the cyclone, the 108 Emergency Medical Ambulance Service, operated by EMRI Green Health Services, has implemented extensive preparedness measures to ensure uninterrupted emergency medical response during and after the storm.

Over the years, the 108 ambulance teams have played a crucial role in rescue and evacuation operations during natural disasters, providing timely medical assistance to those in distress. Maintaining this commitment, the team has initiated a comprehensive preparedness plan aimed at ensuring the safety of patients, staff, and vehicles throughout the cyclone period.

The 108 Ambulance Team has made thorough preparations to effectively manage the situation arising from Cyclone Montha. The 108 Call Centre is equipped with backup power, internet, and communication systems to guarantee uninterrupted emergency responses from the control and dispatch center. Additional personnel have been deployed to handle the anticipated increase in emergency calls and to prevent any call abandonment. District Coordinators have been directed to maintain close coordination with district health authorities, local administrations, and police officials to facilitate timely rescue and medical assistance, particularly in areas that may become isolated due to the cyclone.

All ambulances have been stocked with essential medicines, first-aid kits, and medical consumables to ensure readiness for any emergencies. As advised by district authorities, vehicles have been parked at higher, safer locations, away from trees, electric poles, and waterlogged areas. Ambulance crew members have been provided with sufficient dry food, drinking water, and personal protective gear to sustain prolonged emergency operations if necessary. Additionally, a dedicated unit has been established within the call centre to ensure the smooth and coordinated transfer of patients to hospitals during the cyclone period.

Regarding these preparations, the State Head of the 108 Ambulance team stated, “Our teams are on full alert and ready to respond swiftly during Cyclone Montha. The safety of our crew and the timely service to patients remain our top priorities. We have ensured that every operational and logistical aspect is in place to serve the people of Odisha efficiently during this challenging time.” The team urges citizens to remain calm, stay indoors during heavy rainfall or winds, and contact 108 in case of any medical emergencies.
