The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed that Cyclone Montha has intensified into a severe storm, with wind speeds ranging between 90 to 100 kmph.
The cyclone is currently located about 240 km from Kakinada and is moving in a north-northwest direction. It is expected to make landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast by tonight.
IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra stated that the cyclone will also impact Odisha, particularly the southern districts. Ganjam, Gajapati, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Malkangiri, and Koraput are likely to experience wind speeds of 60 to 70 kmph, with the possibility of even stronger gusts. These areas are also expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall today and tomorrow.
The IMD has issued alerts for these districts, warning of potential flooding and landslides. Some locations may receive up to 20 cm of rainfall, especially in hilly and interior regions. Rainfall has already begun in parts of southern Odisha, and the impact of the cyclone will become more visible during landfall.
Wind speeds are expected to peak during the night and gradually decrease by the morning of October 29. Due to the intense rain, there is a high risk of landslides in interior districts. Authorities have urged residents to take necessary precautions and stay away from vulnerable areas.
The IMD has so far provided accurate forecasts, helping local administrations prepare in advance. Emergency teams are on alert, and relief centers are being readied to support affected communities.
