Odisha is on high alert as Cyclone Montha approaches the state’s southern region. The government has intensified preparedness measures, deploying disaster response teams, closing schools, and setting up shelters to ensure public safety.
NDRF and Fire Services Deployed in Vulnerable Districts
Five teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been stationed in Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Kandhamal, and Rayagada, the districts expected to face the storm’s major impact.
Each team is equipped with power boats, rubber boats, JCBs, power chains, tree-cutting tools, and telescopic lights to handle emergency rescue and relief operations effectively.
Alongside, the Fire Services Department has mobilized 123 teams under the Berhampur RDC circle and 144 teams under the Cuttack RDC circle. In coastal zones, 100 trained lifeguards have been deployed in Puri, and additional teams are on standby in Gopalpur to manage sea-related incidents.
Cyclone Shelters and Evacuation Measures

In vulnerable areas such as Ganjam and Gajapati, pregnant women, senior citizens, and patients are being relocated to safer locations as a preventive measure.
In Gajapati district alone, 91 pregnant women and 946 residents have already been shifted to designated shelters.
