A 17-year-old girl student was critically injured after being attacked with a sharp weapon by a youth over a one-sided love affair in Cuttack City. The incident took place at Choudhury Bazaar area on Monday.
Reportedly, the victim has been admitted to SCB MCH in critical condition while Purighat police station is conducting raids at various places to arrest the accused youth, who is on the run after the murderous attack.
According to sources, the girl student from the Manighosh Bazaar area is studying in an educational institution. A youth from the Choudhury Bazaar area had a one-sided love for her. He used to harass her on the way to school and tuition many times with love proposals. After the girl’s family members warned him, the youth became vengeful.
This evening, when the student was going from Manighosh Bazaar towards Nandisahi, the accused youth waylaid her near Chandan Pokhari and stabbed her multiple times with a sharp weapon on her neck, hands and face.
Hearing the screams, locals rescued her in a profusely bleeding condition and admitted her to SCB Medical College & Hospital.
On receiving the information, the Purighat police station immediately reached the spot and started investigating. When the police rushed to the address of the accused youth, he fled.
The accused has been identified as Ramu alias Ramesh Chandra Behera (35), an auto driver by profession. The police have learned from initial investigations that he has been arrested twice in criminal cases.
On the other hand, there has been a strong protest among the locals regarding the incident. Earlier, the family members had complained to the police against the accused youth. But the police only reprimanded him and let him go, and today, people staged a ruckus in front of the police station, alleging that such a situation has arisen due to the apathy of the police.
Till the last report came in, senior police officers were negotiating with the irate people and supervising the investigation process. Police said that the accused will be arrested soon.
