The Special Judge of the Vigilance Court in Bhubaneswar on July 31 convicted Madan Mohan Samantaray, the former Superintending Engineer of the Irrigation Eastern Circle in Cuttack (Retired), for possession of disproportionate assets under Section 13(2) read with Section 13(1)(e) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
Following a detailed investigation and charge sheet filed by the Odisha Vigilance, the retired engineer was sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1,00,000. In case of non-payment of the fine, he would be liable to undergo additional imprisonment as per legal provisions.
Odisha Vigilance, bolstered by the court’s verdict, has now initiated steps to approach the competent authority for the suspension of pension benefits of the convicted officer.
This conviction marks a strong stance by the state vigilance department against corruption in public service, underscoring its continued effort to ensure accountability and transparency across government sectors.
