Bengaluru: Families of the coronavirus victims had to wait for hours outside burial grounds here to perform the last rites of their dear ones.
Ambulances were seen stationed outside crematoriums and burial grounds carrying bodies of COVID victims overburdening the facilities. The workers at these facilities say they are working overtime to accommodate the bodies for final rites.
Chandra Kumar, a crematorium worker, said the huge surge in COVID cases in the city has overburdened the health infrastructure as well as the crematoriums. Â An ambulance driver, Rudresh, Â said he had to wait for at least 8 hours before the bodies taken to the crematorium at Hosapalya.
Presently, Bengaluru has reported 521 deaths per million population, while there were 261 deaths per million population in September 2020 during the first COVID peak.
