A couple from Kotasingha village in Odisha’s Boudh district attempted self-immolation near Gandhi Marg in Bhubaneswar, holding their 7-year-old daughter, allegedly due to the child’s prolonged illness and lack of medical support.
According to police sources, the couple had initially approached the district collector for assistance but claimed they received no help. In a final plea for intervention, they travelled to Bhubaneswar intending to meet Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. However, while en route to the State Assembly with their two children, they were intercepted by police officers deployed near the PMG area.
The couple reportedly expressed their intent to end their lives due to the child’s deteriorating health condition. Their actions have sparked widespread concern, especially in light of several recent self-immolation cases across Odisha, including incidents in Balasore and Bargarh.
This tragic episode underscores the growing desperation among citizens facing medical and social neglect, prompting renewed calls for responsive governance and mental health support.
