After years of suspension since 2017, college elections in Odisha might finally make a comeback.
The state’s Higher Education Minister, Suryavanshi Suraj, announced today that the government is actively considering conducting student elections, bringing hope to campuses across the state.
Student elections had been halted due to reasons ranging from violence to COVID-19 disruptions. Over the years, several student organisations have demanded their reinstatement, staging protests and appeals to the government. However, no concrete steps had been taken until now.
The government is now looking into completing the academic curriculum before Durga Puja to ensure that elections do not disrupt coursework. The Chief Minister has also expressed interest in resuming student elections, indicating that the administration is serious about moving forward.
Students across Odisha have responded with enthusiasm, welcoming the announcement as an opportunity to revive democratic engagement in colleges. While official dates and procedures are yet to be finalised, the declaration marks a significant development in the state’s education policy.
