The Chennai Central–New Jalpaiguri Express (Train No. 22611) derailed near Jakhapura railway station in Odisha’s Jajpur district on Thursday morning, with three coaches slipping off the tracks. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported, according to the East Coast Railway (ECoR).
The incident occurred at 08:51 hrs while the train was passing through Jajpur Yard. One AC coach and two general coaches derailed within yard limits. Officials noted that the train was moving at a very slow speed at the time, which prevented injuries.
Immediately after the derailment, Accident Relief Train (ART) units from Bhubaneswar and Khurda Road, along with Accident Relief Medical Equipment (ARME) from Khurda Road, were dispatched at 08:53 hrs. Senior railway officials reached the site and began monitoring restoration and safety operations.
ECoR confirmed that restoration work is underway and further details will be shared as investigations progress. The cause of the derailment has not yet been determined.
The incident highlights the importance of rapid response systems in minimising risks during railway accidents. Authorities assured passengers that safety remains the top priority as restoration continues at Jakhapura.
