In a landmark judgment delivered by the Bhubaneswar Additional District and Sessions Judge, Bhagaban Purty, also known as Manguli Purty, has been sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for assaulting a minor in 2023.
The accused was further fined ₹5000, and failure to pay will result in an additional three months of imprisonment.
The case originated in Chandaka Police Station (Case No.108/2023) on April 11, 2023, under relevant IPC Sections and the POCSO Act. The court relied on the testimony of 17 witnesses and substantial documentary evidence to deliver the verdict. The government’s Special Public Prosecutor, Rajib Sasmal, represented the case with diligence.
The incident unfolded when the accused lured the minor from her home under the guise of buying biscuits. He took the child to his residence, where the heinous act occurred. The victim’s cries alerted her family, leading to the swift arrest of the accused after a thorough investigation conducted by Sub-Inspector Jyotsnarani Pradhan.
The successful prosecution reaffirms Bhubaneswar Police’s commitment to justice, marking this as the 14th conviction in the district this year and following 92 convictions in the previous year.
Statement from Police Commissionerate: “The Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissionerate remains steadfast in its resolve to combat crimes against minors and ensure justice is served in such heinous cases.”
