In a swift response to a recent attack on Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Union government has accorded her ‘Z’ category VIP security cover, marking a significant escalation in protective measures.
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officially took charge of her security on Thursday, following a threat perception report submitted by central intelligence agencies.
The upgraded security detail includes 22–25 armed CRPF commandos stationed round-the-clock at Gupta’s official residence and Camp Office on Raj Niwas Marg. The VIP Security Group (VSG), which also protects Union Home Minister Amit Shah and members of the Gandhi family, will oversee the deployment.
Gupta, 51, was previously under top-level protection by the Delhi Police. The shift comes after an alleged attempt on her life during a ‘Jan Sunwai’ programme on Wednesday morning. Her office described the incident as a “well-planned conspiracy to kill her.” The accused was arrested on the spot and has been booked for attempted murder. Delhi Police has taken him into five-day custody for further investigation.
New security protocols include restricted access to Gupta’s residence, advanced surveillance equipment, and proximate protection by male and female personal security officers during public engagements. The CRPF’s involvement aligns her security with other high-profile leaders such as Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and governors of West Bengal, Bihar, and Karnataka.
The central protection list categorises VIP security from Z-plus (ASL) to X, with ‘Z’ category signifying a high threat level and substantial resource allocation.
